With a generous grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the Sturgeon City project has been able to create the Sturgeon City Science Series.

The first project was the Sturgeon City Science Institute. Targeted at eighth grade graduates who have special interests in science, the Science Institute seeks to further brighten that spark and create an appreciation for our home community.

During the week, they sampled water, examined a forest and lily pond, studied the beach and coastal habitat and identified plant life in a man-made wetlands.

The Wilson Bay Keepers is an after school program designed to promote environmental volunteerism among middle school youth who have an interest in science. The youth work side-by-side with the researchers and project managers in the Wilson Bay Initiative - the work to clean up Wilson Bay.

Science Explorers is for middle school youth who have an interest in science and wish to learn more about the Scientific Method. During five Saturdays, the youth explore the science of the world around them; evaluating habitats, studying water quality and considering theories that they prove, or disprove.

Applications are being taken now for the Wilson Bay Keepers and Science Explorers
