Students use the environment around Sturgeon City as a real world classroom for needed lessons about their community and its habitat..

About the Center

While the construction of the Environmental Education Center has not begun, operations currently take place in portions of the former Wastewater Treatment Plant and offsite within classrooms.

• We offer an opportunity for field trips for area schools and groups. Our Environmental Education component connects learning at the center with the NC Standard Course of Study and the No Child Left Behind Act. See our page with information, or call us for more information.

• Many programs are headquartered from our current location. We operate the Wilson Bay Watchdogs
, an after-school program for students to work along side scientists, the Sturgeon City Science Explorers, a program that practices the scientific inquiry method of learning and the site serves as a host to the Sturgeon City Institutes each summer.

• The Sturgeon City site as it is also hosts several significant meetings designed to help advance water quality, habitat restoration and improve the stakeholder interests in our environment.

Catching interesting stuff with a seine.
