Sturgeon City offers free field trips to classes in the Onslow County and Camp Lejeune school systems. Activities offered during these trips have been aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) for the appropriate grade levels.

Activities offered include: exploration of the Sturgeon City restored and natural marsh, plant and animal identification and classification with field books and lecture, examination of a freshwater lily pond habitat, and tours of the former Wilson Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant and the newer Land Application plant.

The tour of the former Wilson Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant includes a discussion on anaerobic bacteria use in treating wastewater, the science of wastewater treatment and a discussion on why the City of Jacksonville plant was abandoned. Equipment on site includes water monitoring test equipment, air quality monitoring equipment, access to data logging equipment, seine nets, dip nets, and field guides. A site for lunch is available at the onsite Sturgeon City Park or at the nearby Wilson Bay Park (reservations required). Staff can also accommodate very small groups of advanced students on boats for netting of fish and intensive habitat evaluation.

Please contact City of Jacksonville Water Quality Section staff at 910 938-6450 to schedule a trip or to request more information.
