The Sturgeon City Institutes & Education Programs

The success of the City of Jacksonville in restoring habitat to Wilson Bay is the backdrop to the Sturgeon City Institutes and Education Programs. The former Wastewater Treatment Plant is headquarters for programs that empower youth to become leaders and adults to further their education.

The Sturgeon City Leadership Institute

Open to 9th grade graduates

Designed to help build young leaders by empowerment of skills and an understanding of our community.

The Sturgeon City Science Institute

Open to 8th grade graduates

Designed to help develop the scientific method and to foster consideration of science as a career.

The Young Leaders Institute

Open to Alumni of the Leadership Institutes and City youth activities as well as Jrs and Srs after an interview

Designed to advance volunteerism, special leadership skill sets and to provide opportunities for leadership.

The Sturgeon City Education Institute

Open to Onslow School Teachers

Designed to demonstrate the available resources for science education in our community and to integrate field opportunities in to science education.

The Institute for Media Studies

Open to students who have demonstrated a desire to learn more about American Media. High School Juniors and Seniors, and college students.

Designed to impart an understanding of media processes with a ‘hands on’ environment.

Advanced Marine Sciences Studies

Open to High School students who have demonstrated learning in advanced science.

Designed to advance knowledge in Marine Science and to provide leadership to younger potential scientists.

Engineering & Physics Institute

Open to students with a desire to learn more about engineering and physics. High School Juniors and Seniors

Designed to provide an intensive experience with engineering in the field, and physics in the real world

Wilson Bay Watchdogs

Open to 8th grade students who want to work along side scientists improving the habitat

Designed to impart knowledge through doing. Students keep a field journal and participate in active scientific pursuit. Meets one day a week after school for six weeks.

Sturgeon City Science Explorers

Open to 7th grade students who have a demonstrated interest in science

Designed to provide a practical in the scientific inquiry method as applied to the environment within our community. Involves 5 Saturdays and must involve a commitment to attend all 5.



Our programs are open to everyone who meets the minimum qualifications, but space is a limitation, priorities are given to City of Jacksonville residents.
