Educational Program Coordinator
The education coordinator will manage Riverworks at Sturgeon City’s educational programs, support the work of the Executive Director and perform administrative duties. This program uses ongoing conservation projects to deliver elementary, middle and high school enrichment programming. Primary duties include programming and administrative tasks. Listed in priority: programming duties include: developing, scheduling, promoting, preparing, presenting, and evaluating educational fee programs presented on and off-site. The coordinator will be required to recruit program participants, recruit, orient, train, schedule part-time outreach program instructors, interns and volunteers. Administrative duties include: assist in fund development activities as requested, managing facility use and assist in day to day operations.
Required skills include: excellent written and oral communication skills; prior experience in educational program design and assembly. Training requires: graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Biology, Zoology, Botany, or other natural science curriculum related to the area of assignment and experience in a natural science field. Educational Program Coordinator
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Reporting directly to the executive director, the primary function of this position is to manage Riverworks at Sturgeon City’s educational programs. Primary duties include programming and administrative tasks, listed in priority. Programming duties include: developing, scheduling, promoting, preparing, presenting, and evaluating educational fee programs presented on and off-site. The coordinator will be required to recruit program participants, recruit, orient, train, schedule part-time outreach program instructors, interns and volunteers. Administrative duties include: assist in fund development activities as requested, managing facility use and assist in day to day operations.
The position works closely with the executive director and program contractors to track and collect program information and fees. The position also works with the executive director to advertise and promote programs. The position conducts research and designs new programs utilizing creative interpretive aids to stimulate interest and to make learning fun. The Program Coordinator creates programs and materials for teacher’s use that follow NC Standard Course of Study, and provides teachers with appropriate resources for pre-visit, visit, and post-visit curriculum and activities.
As a member of the education team, this position assists in delivering civic and environmentally based programs, helps train teachers, interns and volunteers, helps staff the touch tank, discovery carts and scheduled programs. The coordinator represents Riverworks at Sturgeon City at fairs, festivals, science fairs, and career days, as well as state and regional environmental education conferences.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Prior experience in educational program design and assembly required. Applicants must be capable of working cooperatively with others, working independently, be creative, resourceful and have good organization skills.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Biology, Zoology, Botany, or other natural science curriculum related to the area of assignment and experience in a natural science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience preparing and presenting educational programs in a zoo, aquarium, nature center, museum or other facility. In addition, earned a North Carolina Environmental Education Certification.
