Student Leaders Get Dirty
Bay Cleanup with Much Aid from Canoes
By: Kelly Thomas and Drew Thomas

On Thursday, June 09, 2005 the SLDI candidates set out in numerous canoes in search of garbage. Aided by marines from our military base, they were able to paddle far from shores in hopes to find the bulks of trash that dwelled in the banks and shores of the river. This was no easy task. With the sun baking and the water stinging the many eager faces longed to accomplish their goal. Tires, nets, and other grotesque filth piled on shore. With the oncoming waste i n creasing as the day wore o n , the faces of these young leaders brightened. The community will definitely benefit the efforts and accomplishments of these students. Not only are they opening their minds to themselves and their community, but also, these young students are shaping a life full of rewards and respect of others. The developing leaders know that what they do today shape what they do tomorrow. They also hope that their actions may inspire others to help aid in their cause. These students are not only learning everyday when they complete a task, but also teaching others. This week, these SLDI candidates see that what they are doing is what each person’s responsibility is as a citizen. Leaders are not shaped by following, b ut b y creating new paths that ensure a journey worth the walk. These students have already begun their walk.
