Wetlands Construction

Previously, people had dumped old appliances and trash, and the City had used the edge of the wastewater treatment plant as a fill area at the time this occurred, the value of wetlands and a clean environment was not fully realized. The Jacksonville City Council recognized this value in 1998 when they approved a plan to convert the area that had been filled in, as well as some other areas, into a productive wetland. With funding from the NC Wetlands Restoration Program, now known as the Environmental Enhancement Program, the first phase was begun. The construction revealed the trash and debris that had been spread there for years, but the result of the work was acres of productive wetlands that are to help filter water both in Wilson Bay and from runoff from the Sturgeon City site.
