Dr. Don Herring

Board Chairman

Dr. Don Herring is the Division Chair for Student Services at Coastal Carolina Community College and has twenty-five years of educational leadership experience.   Named North Carolina Community College's Staff Person of the Year, Dr. Herring is very engaged in the Jacksonville community and believes Sturgeon City is a wonderful organization that will instill civic involvement in the area's youth.

Mary Anne Williams

Treasurer

Mary Anne first moved to Jacksonville in 1973 and followed the progress Sturgeon City has made in promoting environmental stewardship and civic involvement.  She has a background in Juvenile Probation Services, Pharmacology, and Business Management.   Mary Anne is dedicated to seeing the program succeed because she feels that it is vital for both Jacksonville’s economic development and for its quality of life initiatives.

Charles Efird

Alfred Keyes

Vice Chairman

Mr. Efird grew up in Eastern North Carolina and is owner of Modern Exterminating in Jacksonville.  He became involved with Sturgeon City in 2005 and feels that the nonprofit has touched many young peoples' lives in the community.  He wants to get the word out about the wonderful programs Sturgeon City offers and the story of how Sturgeon City was founded.

Secretary

A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, Mr. Keyes is an active volunteer in the Jacksonville community and has been a Sturgeon City board member since 2006.  He is very familiar with the Sturgeon City Institutes and strongly supports the organization's mission to provide hands-on educational science programs to area youth.

Ken Hagan

Director

Ken Hagan has a long history of working in both the local government and with the City's youth.  Mr. Hagan served the City of Jacksonville as its City Manager for five and a half years and served twenty-seven years as the City's Parks and Recreation Director.  It was during his time with the City that he was introduced to Sturgeon City and its promotion of environmental stewardship and civic involvement.  He feels that Sturgeon City is an important community asset and wants to see its programs grow and reach more children in the Eastern Carolina area.

Tiffany Choice

Director

Tiffany Choice was born is Jacksonville, NC and graduated from Jacksonville High School, where she first came involved with Sturgeon City as a volunteer for the Sturgeon City Institutes.  She now works in the family business as the Area Supervisor for Chick-fil-A of Jacksonville.  Tiffany is proud to be on the Sturgeon City Board of Directors because she feels the programs help influence and mold the next generation to be civic leaders and environmental stewards.

John Rouse

Director

Mr. Rouse  is originally from Kinston, NC and is retired from Wachovia/Wells Fargo after a 32 year career.  John has always enjoyed the outdoors and loves to fish, hunt and travel.

While Mr. Rouse is a retired banker, he has a teaching degree from East Carolina University and has always been a supporter of education.  His love for our coastal waters and his continued desire to support education has made his placement on the board an ideal fit.

Mr. Rouse was active in the acquisition and placement of the artificial reef in New River and has participated in studies pertaining to the movement of fish in our local waters. 

Dr. Jay Levine

Director

Dr. Levine is a faculty member at North Carolina State University and specializes in Veterinarian Services.  Dr. Levine has been involved in the Sturgeon City project from its conception and believes the nonprofit is a vital component to promoting environmental stewardship and civic involvement in the community’s youth. 

Gary Danford

Director

Born in Jacksonville, Gary Danford returned to live here in 2011 with his wife Marilyn because they consider it home.  After learning about Sturgeon City from friends and colleagues, he wanted to be part of helping the organization to accomplish its goals of fostering environmental stewardship and civic leadership in the community's youth.
